9 Letter Words

9 letter words for Scrabble and Words with Friends

9-Letter words have a tricky length in games such as Scrabble or Words with Friends. For starters, the only way to build them is by transforming a word already on the board by adding new letters or by combining it with a new one.

Nevertheless, the points they yield are very similar and, sometimes, even lower than those granted by words with 8 letters. Therefore, trying to build a 9-letter word is usually not worth the trouble.

Most players tend to prefer to save important tiles and go for a shorter word. Words with 9 letters are normally played either to block the opponent from doing it or when the length of the word reaches a special square, in which case its value is increased.

What are the highest-scoring 9-letter words?

There are no permissible 9-letter words in Scrabble or Words with Friends that contain three Zs, unlike other word lengths. For that reason, the top-scoring words with 9 letters are SHOWBIZZY and QUIZZICAL, both yielding 38 points.

If we take away the Z and the 10 points associated with it, the next highest-scoring words are worth 30 points. Two examples of these include BLACKJACK and EXCHEQUER.

What are the lowest-scoring 9-letter words?

The lowest-scoring words with this length are always worth 9 points as they contain solely letter tiles that yield 1 point each. Examples of low-value words with 9 letters include URINATION, SUSTAINER, LISTENERS, and ALTERNATE, among many others. In fact, over 200 permissible 9-letter words in Scrabble and Words with Friends are worth the lowest possible score.
